The Triple Bunk Bed

The boys keeping the lumber in check

When we first moved to Manhattan last Summer, James built a toddler-sized triple bunk bed for our little men. Because the room that they share is so small and since they all fit a toddler bed (the perks of having children so close together), we (meaning me) decided that to save space, a toddler-sized triple bunk bed was a must. No doubt there were a trillion other things that he would have rather done with the last week of freedom before vet school started, but a certain wifey was most insistent. How I got so lucky with James I'll never know?! I drew up a sketch of what I would like it to look like and Jamesy-cakes built it for me! He claims that it would have been a lot better if he actually had the right tools but I really don't see how. I would recommend a handy husband to anyone!

My honeybun. He built it all in the hot Summer heat while the cicadas buzzed and a trillion chiggers pestered him.

Mason built an airplane with the remaining wood and apparently Char thought it was pretty spiffy!

All the building done!

Char approved of Poppy's hard work

After James did all the hard stuff, I stained it and then we moved it indoors. However, I couldn't bring myself to post any pictures of it until I finally got around to finishing the three quilts that I had started before we moved in. They were my first quilting adventure so who cares if it took me nearly a year to finish? Hot dog!!!
The bed

I was going for a masculine but boyish look and I was lucky enough to have an extremely talented quilter live just up the street from us in Logan who helped me muster up the courage to tackle the project. We miss Sister Isrealson but every time I see the quilts she helped me start I think about her and how much I loved our time in Cache Valley.
The prints come from a Sarah Jane Studios line. Lucky for me I wanted a striped look since it was a lot less complicated and perfect for a novice like me.

But let's be honest, I can barely see the quilts after the boy's all throw their stuffed animals on their beds.

Their room is so small I couldn't take a picture of much of it at a time, but here is what the rest of it looks like for any of you who have been wondering (Sydney Lane). I still have pictures to hang but come on, I've only been here six month! :)
L: On one wall they have built in cupboards and a desk that is perfect for favorite trinkets and a favorite pair of rats. R: Books. We love books.

Dare to do Right is my favorite primary song and I sing it to the boys as a lullaby on a regular basis. So much so, I guess, that if I ever start singing it at any other time Mason claims that it makes him sleepy and they all ask me to stop. James cut out the letters for me during Christmas break and I am so glad. I have so many good intentions but I swear tools were made for burlier people than I. I dream of making my own furniture but when it really comes down to it, the only power tool that I am even strong enough to use is a sander. Such a shame. But mostly for James. :)

Your quilts are excellent! I too am a novice quilter but have just made two for a children's leukaemia charity that a blog friend of mine supports and have just started my third. Having to be precise is not second nature to me.......sigh...
And the triple bunk is awesome :)

Love the triple bed. So is mason pretty good at making his bed, cuz how does he get up there?! I'm trying to teach swede how to make his bed but so far it involves me doing all the work then him throwing his 20 stuffed animals on top. Any advice on how to limit the stuffed animals?! I hide them in the closet and he always finds them :)

This is the cutest room! The bunkbeds look SO great! They seriously look like professional-quality! Sydney has been asking for bunkbeds ever since. And those quilts are perfect! Exactly the style I love for little boys.
