Baby Animals

Mason found this baby map turtle on a fallen tree-trunk.

Warm weather has come to Kansas once again and with it all sorts of adorable little creatures! I thought I would share some pictures of some of the animals friends that we have recently met. First off, the other day at the lake, Mason and Char came racing over to me with two little baby turtles in their hands! We have seen all sorts of turtles at Tuttle Creek, but up until this point it has never occured to me that we would see little mini versions of them! My heart mealted!

 Coobie is smitten!

We popped them in a bucket of water and brought them home to play with us for a little while before we (mercifully) let them go free again. This will probably be any day now since we have to keep their aquarium safe by storing it on top of the fridge to keep them away from well intened little hands (Coobie). And let's face it, storing them out of sight takes all the fun out of having these little creatures around!
Life would be drab without Poppy around to "esplore" with

About a month ago we noticed two robins making a next right out our back door. What luck! It took all of our will-power (Well, Mason's at least) not to sneak the eggs out before they hatched and raise them as our own. However, it is good that we did because these little babies had such doting parents who were much happier about feeding them worms round the clock than I would have been. One day we heard a crash on our back porch and rushed outside to find the sorriest little robin chick who had fallen out of his nest! After some quick pictures, we snuggled him back in his nest with his brothers and sisters again. All four of the chicks have now flown the roost. We miss them but Mason pointed out that at least they left us the cool nest!

Another favorite animal sighting has been all sorts of little ring-necked snakes that the boys find under rocks in our backyard. Boy do they ever get a kick out of finding these small and harmless reptiles! Today, in fact, Mason found one that was much smaller than the worms that our boys have been digging up for fishing trips.

One of the first days that we were finding them in our yard, Mason said, "Aunt Kafleen (my sister) is my girl 'cause she likes finding snakes like me!" Poor Mason is still coming round to the idea that Kathleen is now engaged to be married to someone besides himself.

Last but not least, this baby animal post would not be complete without sharing this picture of the little bunny that James found when he was mowing the lawn the other day. Ever since, Charlie has been talking non-stop about the bunny that he will be getting for his birthday. Good thing dreams are free!

Isaac is so jealous! He would love to find ring-necks in his backyard. Instead, we have to be careful of rattlesnakes!
