Sugar Sweet Farms 2013

This year we decided to try out the Kansas soil and plant ourselves a garden! We were all really excited since it has been a few years. We planted all sorts of favorites like tomatoes, zucchini, corn, watermelon, peas and PUMPKINS! And not only pumpkins, but four different types of them! I had visions of throwing a huge Halloween party and let children pick out their pumpkin of choice. I couldn't think of how I was going to figure out a hay ride quite yet, but visions were forming all the same! When we planted the garden, we had just recently read Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder and were thrilled to be like Almanzo Wilder! And with James on our team, we were certain of a bountiful harvest!

We worked like the dickens and only one of us rested:
Coobie was bent on not getting  a noticeable farmers tan so he worked in his undies. While we slaved away, he snuck off a time or two to say hi to our neighbors do Caden (but who the boys call Pig).

By the time July rolled around, the garden was blooming!

 Everything was lush and green....

...and you better believe we were feeling good about ourselves!
We referred to Mason as Almanzo all Summer

But sadly, when we went away on vacation at the end of August, our garden really took it personally and decided to call it quits. Sad but true. Gone were our hopes and dreams of living off the land. And my pumpkins? Big-time flop. Even with the milk we fed them, these two little ditties were the best of the year:
So no Halloween pumpkin patch party at our place. Don't tell the Wilders.
