After the adventure of Coobie's stay in the hospital came to an end, signs of Christmas started springing up around the house! We went out and bought a tree (and a small extra $12 tree for me to make wreaths with) and started decorating!
James is so good to me
Sadly, we made the mistake of putting the tree downstairs in our playroom where we thought that it would be cozy to gaze at while we snuggled together and watched our Christmas movies. Wrongo! We realized that we didn't go downstairs as much as we thought and I mostly just saw the tree when I carried our laundry baskets back and forth. Humbug! Thankfully, James saved the day and carried the entire tree and all of it's trimmings upstairs in time to save the holiday spirit.
Our first tree attempt
After the decorating was complete, I moved on to the next matter of import; candy making! A few years back I saw the cutest marshmallow snowman on Matthew Mead's website and ever since I have wanted to make them! This was the year. In fact, we made them several times this year while we figured it all out.
We were even able to give some of our candy and treats out to a handful of friends before I lost all steam and realized that the world didn't revolve around my homemade candy (which is sad) and that there were far more important things to worry about. Maybe next year I can pull off Martha Stewart for real?...Who knows, maybe even Christmas cards will actually happen, too?! A girl can dream.

Charlie made a special plate for his favorite church friend, Colette.
Spritzer cookies. A Sieg family tradition that is a must!
Sadly, midway through the month, Mason's beloved rat, Typer started showing signs of being sick. He became even more sluggish than usual and lost all interest in food. And when he wouldn't eat even his favorite yearly treat of homemade caramel, we knew that something really was wrong.
It was then that Poppy found a large mass in Typer's stomach that most likely was cancerous. A few days later, on December 18th, Typer died. Even cold-hearted me bawled like a baby over the loss of this gentle giant. I don't think I have ever come across a sweeter creature and he is still missed very much.
Mason and his brothers made him a marker for his grave and we had a little funeral for our trusty little friend. We like to think that he is feasting on all sorts of sweets up in heaven.
