Flashback Friday: Smooth Operator

At the start of my Freshman year at BYU, I took part in an orientation with the rest of my new freshman friends. During Freshman orientation the new students are divided up into small "Y-groups" of about 20 kids (those with whom you will generally have the majority of your classes with). In your group you then have the chance to learn your way around campus, memorize the cougar fight song and make friends right off the bat.

I loved our group from the start. Everyone was so friendly, and no clicks had formed yet for the year. We were all new and all very excited for the adventure that were awaiting us. On top of that, there was one guy in my group that really caught my eye. His name was Dan and he was tall, dark and handsome. I thought he was so dreamy. All weekend long we talked and flirted. I soaked up all the attention he showered on me and I could tell that this was going to be a fun Freshman year.

On the very last night of our orientation, a dance was held on campus to welcome all of us new-comers. The air was full of excitement and I couldn't wait to see Dan. As the night wore on, I joined a group of friends on the dance floor. We were dancing and having fun when suddenly a familiar figure joined our circle: Dan. He had found me finally and I knew the night was only going to get better! Immediately I stopped dancing to go flirt with him. After a short while I asked him why he wasn't dancing. "You aren't either," he replied. Foolishly, I realized he was right but if there was any area that I felt confident in (whether or not had reason too) it was dancing. I was sure that his adoration of me was only going to increase when he saw my dance moves. With a twinkle in my eyes, I busted out one of my best dance moves.

Out of nowhere, someone behind me stepped a little too close and threw my groove off. I began to fall as a result. In my panic, I grabbed out for anything, ANYTHING to catch me. I was relieved when I made some sort of contact....until I realized what had saved me. When I was falling, I had grabbed onto Dan's CROTCH and was still holding on for dear life!!!! I was horrified and by the look on his face, so was he. I quickly blurted out apoligies while I let go and stood up.

Dan replied with a high pitched, "It's okay" and instinctively covered himself before I did any more damage. After a short awkward silence, he retreated to a safer crowd. I was humiliated and knew that all hopes of romantic bliss were down the drain. My embarrassment only multiplied when I realized on the following Monday that not only were we in the same English class, but that we would have to sit by each other all semester long.

I love your stories. Your life is definitely interesting and exciting even if it's sometimes at the expense of your ego. At least you will always have stuff to laugh at! I still remember when you told me about doing the worm in front of Brandon hoping to impress him. Classic!

Honestly, HOW do you have such an amazing repertoire of hilarious stories? No. SERIOUSLY. Every time I come to read your blog, it's like a full-on workout with how hard I end up laughing my bum off. You are hilarious! And MAJOR props to you for being willing to share all these knee-slappers. I'd probably be too embarrassed, but you pull them off SO perfectly!

I TOTALLY remember you telling me all about this story that same night in our dorm room! It set a precedent for the entire year. I knew I was going to have a fun time listening to all of your adventures. I also remember when we used to say, "Dan Dan he's our MAN if he can't do it, no one can!" Do you remember the photoshoot we had with him at that park not too far from Helaman Halls? We were all goo-goo-ga-ga for Dan the Man.
