Mr. Fruit Leather

In July, my Mom was in town and to celebrate, a group of us Vance women went garage sale-ing. I had a ball and was impressed with their haggling abilities (I am a garage sale novice, but with their tutelage, I may get good yet). At one of the houses, my Mom spied a food dehydrator for a steal. Knowing that James and I had been wanting one, she kindly gave it to us. Hot dog!!!
This month our apricot tree is booming with fruit and James is giving it a run for it's money. He is in charge of the fruit drying department (I have hit the "I really feel pregnant" stage and hardly even cook these days) and comes up with all sorts of cool treats. Today he is exploring into the wonderful world of beef jerky. Sugar Sweet Farms really is wonderful!
Speaking of Sugar Sweet Farms, we experienced a loss this week. Our second attempt at having egg-laying chickens came to an end a couple nights ago when a mean raccoon got into their pen and ate them all. A pretty low blow. Also, I am having major problems with my patience in waiting for our tomatoes to ripen. It doesn't help that our neighbors have a million plump red tomatoes already on their bushes! Blast! Or that their well-nourished pumpkin plant seems to be killing our biggest plant. Blast.
