Roasting Hot Dogs

Friday night rolled around with a fun surprise for me and the boys! James came home earlier than expected, fenced our yard (so that I could stay sane. Huckle just realized that our yard was only partially fenced before and has been enjoying the extra freedom ever since) and then wowed us with a tasty dinner of roasted hot dogs by the lake. Fall here in Manhattan, Kansas is so beautiful and it was a treat to be out in it with another bonfire! Halfway through our roasting, a huge storm blew in and it started raining and hailing on us! Thankfully we stuck around, because minutes later it was bright and beautiful once more and we were able to enjoy the rest of our outing in peace. What luck!
The boys thought that the dry leaves would be good fuel for the fire so they brought oodles to the fire ring.

L: Char using all his strength to help break the big sticks they found laying around. R: James, showing the boys how to get a fire started. Generally I like to take care of this job but I was having too much fun documenting it all instead.

Charpy snacked on chips while he waited

Coobie, learning the ropes

Hot dog!

Yummy! Actually, they weren't but who really cares?

James and I started roasting ours right as the storm rolled in

It was so cool to see the rain and hail pelt the water

Finding shelter

L: Three cheers to sunshine! R: Thank goodness for warm outerwear!

Our view of Tom Sawyers Island. Well, that is what we call it at least.

Pops teaching Char how to skip a rock

James. The lighting was out of control!

L: Apparently Mason has a model pose. He busted this out when I asked him to hold still so that I could play with the light. R: Charpy found a leaf. He has given me a trillion of them this Fall already since he knows how much I love them.

L: James, pretending to skip Char on the water. R: Our view

When we were all done with our fun, we had Mason practice good fire safety by dousing the coals with water from the lake.

James let Coobie drive to pick me and the other boys up after we threw our trash away at he dumpster. Coobie was tickled pink!
