At the beginning of October, we added another little rat-friend to our family of pets. Yes, I know that you might think that we are weird for now having THREE rats on purpose, but Coobie didn't have a little rat of his own yet, and we figured that he could use a little responsibility. And besides, when it made him this happy, can you really blame us?
McCabe named his new rat Reepicheep (since he is obsessed with that character from Narnia) and cannot get enough of him! We were a little worried because up to this point, Coobie has proven himself as a bit of a light-weight in the chore department but he has really risen to the challenge! Honestly, no rat has ever been loved more than this little guy and that is saying a lot! Whether Reep likes it or not, every morning is started by collecting Reepicheep out of his cage and then snuggling occurs until breakfast.
Reep is half Dumbo rat and because of that, he has adorable floppy, over-sized ears (just like his owner).
(The other day McCabe was pretending to be Davy Crockett and was wearing his beloved coonskin cap and toting a toy rifle. Sadly, even with his duds, Coobie was having a hard time feeling like he looked the part. "I not look like Davy Crockett because my ears are sticking out and his doesn't!" Poor little fella. But in truth, I adore his proud little good-ears! I have no doubt that Davy would have been jealous!)
Maybe that is why they get along so well?
Doesn't the love look 100% mutual?!
Because he is such a great sport, we love to shower him with treats:
We are in love.
To those of you who may be a little shy of the idea of housing a rodent (like I very much was), let me tell you a few of their many virtues. They are smart and sweet, playful and fun, and are GREAT with children! These guys have been squeezed and squashed and carried all over the place but never bite (unlike the fiesty hamsters that I grew up with). And unlike their lame hamster cousins, they don't even try to get away! They seem like they actually like us!
Basically they are like having an extremely low-maintenance dog. A dog that can sit on your shoulder.
Char still loves his Junior.
Typer is now two-years-old and is almost two pounds! This gentle giant takes eating VERY seriously!
Yes, we all love our rats:
Even cold-hearted me.

Jared says he can totally sympathize on the ear front :) We like sticky-outie ears at our house, too! Also, I just can't get over what an amazing photographer you are! Your pictures are gorgeous
that rodent looks totally like reepicheep! so cute!
You are the coolest mom I know. This post almost made me want to get a pet rat! (I actually really wanted a pet rat growing up but my parent's weren't having it!)
