Early last summer, after James went to Plum Island and before he played hard-to-get in Texas for his officer training, our family made a little trip up to Omaha, Nebraska to see what we could see. It was kinda our last hoorah before James left and we made sure to enjoy every last second! We started off by visiting the Winter Quarters visitors center where we went on a tour and learned more about our pioneer ancestors who stayed there while they got ready to cross the plains to Utah. We also said hello to our beautiful tiny temple that sits across the street. Way cool!
Do you see the Lehi M. Vance named right in the middle of this monument? He was one of the many who died during their hard stay in Winters Quarters.
The visitors center may have been pretty cool, but few things can top staying in a hotel and watching shows on a hotel bed, according to my boys!
The next morning, we tried our best to one-up the hotel stay by heading over to the zoo! Now, I have been to my fair share of zoos in my day, but this one really took the cake! Apparently the Henry Doorly zoo is ranked #1 in the world and now I believe it! We had a ball exploring all day long and still didn't get a chance to see everything! So if just visiting us isn't quite enough for you to head into the middle of America, let this place tempt you!
We started off by being first in line for the camel ride! I have to say, it was worth every over-priced penny to see my boys ride that thing in a tiny little circle.
Then we made use of our rides pass and went for a spin on the train:
You can't tell from this shot but I was about to give up the ghost I was so scared! That thing got high! I tried to be brave and ride it again but I just couldn't.
James and the boys were MUCH braver than I was. Not shocking, I guess.
After my failed bravery, we stayed on land for a bit while we explored the many exhibits:
The zoo had so many indoor exhibits and this rain forest one was especially cool!
After a morning on our feet, we decided to rest while learning about some more cool animals during a fun little show:
And then we dined on only the best of foods:
We had a great time!
....even if we got a little tired...
...and a little cranky.
But all's well that ends with a carousel ride, right?!
What a day!

This post was awesome. My husband just applied to grad schools and University of Nebraska-Lincoln is one of our schools of choice so although the thought of living in Nebraska does NOT sound good to me in the slightest, if he does get in there I know I have like the coolest Zoo ever and possibly a cute family to go visit!?
