When it was time for Valerie to fly home, we decided to make a day of our trip into Kansas City, Missouri. After wowing her (I'm sure) with the Topeka zoo and the adjoining park, we headed over to Clay County, Missouri, to see the Liberty Jail. What a treat to live so close to so much of the church's history! We loved our tour of Liberty Jail and loved the spirit that we felt while we were there. It was humbling to be in the spot where Joseph Smith suffered all those months during the Winter of 1839. I have always found strength in sections of scripture that Joseph received during that time, but now that I am experiencing the bitter cold wind of this region, I appreciate his bravery and patience even more.
This was the hole that led to the cell below.
L: This small hole (I think if was 18 inches wide) was one of only two windows and source of their only fresh air. The walls were about four feet thick, making these small holes practically useless. R: The front door to the prison.
The model of Joseph Smith.
When we were done with the tour, we took Valerie to see the Kansas City temple. How lucky for us that it was finished this Summer! It such a beautiful temple.
In that pretty setting, we decided to take some last pictures with Aunt Valerie before she took off back to Utah:
We sure were glad to see Aunt Valerie and thrilled that she put up with us for the two weeks that she did. Holidays are always better when spent with family. I love you, Valy!
